Sabre engine could revolutionise space flight

A UK company which hopes to build a re-usable space plane has won an important endorsement from the European Space Agency (ESA) after completing key tests on its novel engine technology.
Reaction Engines believes its novel Sabre engine, which would operate like a jet engine in the atmosphere and a rocket in space, could displace rockets for space access and transform air travel by bringing any destination on earth to no more than four hours away.

Skylon: A British dream of space

I'm listening to a countdown. Not in the steamy Florida heat of Cape Canaveral. Or the desert winds of Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Instead this one is under way in a makeshift cabin under drizzly skies in a corner of Oxfordshire.
Some great inventions began in humble surroundings - think Bill Gates and Steve Jobs toiling in their garages - so I'm not being critical.

An Oxfordshire firm's decades-old dream of building a plane that can take off into space has taken a giant leap towards becoming reality after receiving the backing of Europe's top scientists.
The European Space Agency (Esa) has said it can find no reasons to scupper Culham-based Reaction Engines' Skylon project, which aims to launch an unpiloted spaceplane into outer space by 2017.

An innovative UK launcher concept is to get 1m euros (£900,000) of investment from the European Space Agency (Esa).
The Skylon spaceplane would take off from a conventional aircraft runway, carry over 12 tonnes to orbit and then return to land on the same runway.
The money will help prove the vehicle's core technologies, including its Sabre air-breathing rocket engine.
