Two, possibly three, huge rocks from outer space put the Arkansas town of Paragould (Greene County) into the history and science books early in 1930. What is now known as the Paragould Meteorite was, at that time, the largest meteorite to ever have been seen falling and then recovered.

The Paragould (LL5) meteorite fell in Arkansas, USA, on the 17th February, 1930.
A total mass of 408 kg was recovered.

He was in Arkansas where he spends the winter months with his daughter, and an article about a meteorite had brought back memories of his childhood days on the Middle Fork. The article was about the Paragould Meteorite that fell in Arkansas on Feb. 17, 1930. It weighed more than 800 pounds, and when it streaked across the sky in the pre-dawn hours, it was observed as far away as Illinois. According to Commercial-News coverage of the meteors fall, it sparked a search for a downed airplane in southern Illinois.

Town remembers 80 years after meteorite

It's been 80 years since a meteorite fell from outer space and landed in Region 8. Early in the morning on February 17, 1930 a meteorite fell from the sky landing in Finch, Arkansas leaving a fifteen foot crater.

Many may be aware that Paragould had an interstellar visitor on Feb 17, 1930. Not the green kind with the flying saucer, rather a massive asteroid that slammed into earths atmosphere at 30,000 mph. There was a tremendous sonic boom that rattled windows and brought out residents into the street at 4:15 a.m. The more religious residents believed that angel Gabriel had blown his horn for the final recall of the human race.

On February 17, 1930, A meteorite impacted near the small town of Paragould, in Northeast Arkansas. At 820 pounds, the samples was, at that time, the largest to ever be seen and recovered. Another meteorite, at 70 pounds, was recovered nearby. A possible third meteorite remains to be found.
