Shasta College has received a new all-sky meteor camera system for the benefit the region's students.
Sandia National Laboratories has contracted with New Mexico University to build 40 systems, and Shasta College is one of the lucky schools across several states that is receiving this technology.
The camera comes with software and is designed to record various classes of events in the night sky. Astronomy and Physics students will be able to record the time, date and place in the sky of several night phenomena.
The camera will document whether a meteor is part of a meteor shower or a simply a sporadic event. The software included will be able to help correlate the event with historically known and identified meteor showers. It also allows the college to contribute data to scientific repositories and to identify new showers.
