Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the service module upon which the Command Module depended.

A checklist used to guide the wounded Apollo 13 spacecraft home after the explosion that led to the famed "Houston, we've had a problem" call sold at auction in Texas Wednesday for just under $390,000.

It's hard for most people to imagine having an emergency situation placed squarely in their lap, only to have no time to think about what to do seconds later.
But that was Seymour "Sy" Liebergot, then 34, a flight controller in NASA's Mission Control in Houston, who was working an eight-hour shift when a monster failure occurred during the Apollo 13 mission more than 40 years ago.

The celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Program continues as Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex remembers the launch of Apollo 13 - the lunar landing mission termed "the successful failure." Forty years ago, the eyes of the world were on the crew of Apollo 13 as astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise bravely endured an onboard explosion en route to the moon. Guests at Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex will have the opportunity to hear stories from the fearless Apollo 13 astronauts first-hand during a celebration commemorating the successful return of the mission on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10, 2010.

Two astronauts nearly lost in the aborted Apollo 13 mission and the legendary flight director who helped save them will be on the Space Coast in April to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ill-fated flight.
Mission commander Jim Lovell, lunar module pilot Fred Haise and NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz will be at Kennedy Space Centre on April 9 to relive the mission and raise money for the nonprofit Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
