Russia's Progress M-62 space cargo ship was buried at a "spaceship cemetery" in southern Pacific, a Mission Control spokesman said Friday.
"The Progress M-62 was de-orbited, and, having partly burned up in the Earth's dense atmosphere, ended its existence in the set area in southern Pacific"
A Russian cargo capsule successfully docked with the international space station early today, delivering 5,000 pounds of supplies that included Christmas gifts. The flawless linkup at 2:14 a.m. CST ended a three-day journey for the unmanned Progress spacecraft. Peggy Whitson, the station's commander, astronaut Dan Tani and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko were to open the capsule later today, gathering fresh fruit and vegetables included as part of the delivery. The station's galley is not equipped with a refrigerator to preserve food.
The Russian cargo spacecraft has successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS). The Progress M-62 is carrying as 2.5 tons of food, oxygen, water and fuel for the orbiting station. The spacecraft also has festive presents for the crew.
The Russian Progress ferry, fired off from the Baikonur cosmodrome on Sunday, was successfully put into a calculated orbit at 10.21 MT.
Progress M-62 detached from a Soyuz-V launch vehicle (which lifted off at 10.12) at an altitude of 200 kilometres above the earth and continued its flight towards the International Space Station according to a set trajectory.
"Launch was at about 10.12 msk. The "progress" flight is now into a three-day orbit program, rather than the normal two day flight, which flies the ship to the international space station; this allows time to prepare the ship systems for the docking" - Mission Control Center (TSUP).
The 27th Progress cargo ship to the International Space Station is scheduled to launch at 07:12 GMT (2:12 a.m. EST), 23rd December, 2007, from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.
