A minke whale that had strayed deep into the Amazon rainforest has been found dead. The 5.5m (18ft) whale was believed to have become lost in the Amazon's many tributaries after leaving the Atlantic more than 1,600km (1,000 miles) away. Attempts by conservationists and volunteers to catch the animal and transport it back to sea failed.
Biologists and villagers in a remote corner of the Amazon rainforest were searching for a 12-tonne whale yesterday that had reportedly lost its way and become stranded 1,000 miles from the ocean. The five-metre long (16ft) creature, which biologists said was probably a minke whale, became stranded on a beach on the Tapajos river, 39 miles from the city of Santarem. Environmental experts said the whale had probably become separated from its group in the Atlantic Ocean, off northern Brazil, after falling ill or being hit by a boat.
A young minke whale stranded in Fraserburgh Harbour for three days has made it back out to sea. The whale is thought to have become separated from its mother after following a fishing boat. Members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) used small boats to try to move the whale using noise.
Attempts to rescue a Minkie whale stranded in Fraserburgh Harbour have been put on hold for the night. Rescuers on board a number of small boats banged steel pipes to create underwater sound waves in a bid to lure the whale out of the harbour.
