This image of the Category 3 storm, Usagi, was taken by the Terra satellite on August 2, 2007, at 02:10  UT.
Two hours before this image was captured, the storm had sustained winds of 120 knots (222 kilometres per hour), and was classed as a Category 4 storm.

This picture shows an image taken by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite on July 31, 2007 which is overlain on an infrared (IR) map from the TRMM Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS).

The Aqua satellite captured this image of Typhoon Usagi in the western Pacific when it was just southwest of Iwo Jima, on July 31. The storm had become a Category Two storm with winds of 167 kilometres per hour and gusts to 200 km/hr.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre has predicted that Usagi would strengthen into a Category Four storm and weaken slightly before striking southern Japan on August 2.
