A strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred at 12:32:04 (UTC) on Tuesday, October 09, 2012, in the Balleny Islands region, 1998 km SSW from Dunedin, New Zealand, at a depth of 10.2 km.

The Balleny Islands

The Balleny Islands form a chain of uninhabited, mainly volcanic, islands in the Southern Ocean stretching from 6615' to 6735'S and 16230' to 16500'E. The group forms a chain that extends for about 160 km in a northwest-southeast direction. The islands are heavily glaciated and are of volcanic origin. Ice tongues project from their slopes into the sea.
