Korabl-Sputnik 1 (Russian: Ship Satellite 1), (also known as Sputnik 4 in the West) was the first test flight of the Soviet Vostok programme, and the first Vostok spacecraft. It was launched on May 15, 1960.

On this day in 1960, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 4.

It was the first test-flight of the Vostok spacecraft that would be used for the first human spaceflight. When reentry was attempted, a bug in the guidance system pointed the capsule in the wrong direction, so instead of re-entering the atmosphere the satellite moved into a higher orbit. It re-entered the atmosphere on or about September 5, 1962. An object identified as part of Sputnik 4 was found in a street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in the USA.

It took the television game show "Millionaire," a radio commentary and printed column by Manitowoc Mayor Kevin Crawford, and a suggestion by Kim Geimer, owner of Persimmons Art Gallery, to bring back the idea of a special festival here to commemorate the day fragments of the Russian spaceship Sputnik IV fell on North Eighth Street in front of the Rahr Civic Centre and Art Museum, now the Rahr-West Art Museum.
It happened in the early morning of Sept. 5, 1962.
