Korea has launched its first military/civilian satellite Arirang 2, which can track objects the size of a car and detect pollutants in sea water. The Multipurpose Satellite 2, as it is officially called, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute developed with its own technology, was successfully launched by a Russian ROCKOT from the Plesetsk facility 800 km northeast of Moscow at 4:05 p.m. on Friday Korean time. With the launch, Korea joins an exclusive club of seven nations that operate a 1 m high-resolution satellite camera permitting observers to distinguish a car from a bus on a Han River bridge from a height of some 685 km.

Rockot, the Russian rocket that carries South Korea's multi-purpose satellite Arirang-2 on board, Friday lifted off from a spaceport in Plesetsk, about 800 kilometres northeast of Moscow.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) that developed Arirang-2 said the three-stage rocket took off on Friday 4:05 p.m. (Korean Time) as planned.
The rocket, converted from an intercontinental ballistic missile, is designed to travel to the sky in roughly 55 minutes to deploy the multi-sensing satellite into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 685 kilometres.

"We will be able to know whether Arirang-2 is successfully put into orbit late tonight or early tomorrow" - Ock Su-hyun, KARI spokesperson.

A multi-spectral camera (MSC) embedded in Airrang-2 will provide high-resolution images for earth mapping, which can be utilized for geographical surveys, environmental observation and natural resource searches.
Also included in its functions is airborne surveillance, possibly on North Korea, as the high-definition MSC will be able to give visual data on the unpredictable communist country's launch preparations or other military activities three times a day.

Russia plans to launch a South Korean satellite on July 28 from a site in northern Russia, a company in charge of the launch said Thursday.

A spokesman for state-run Khrunichev Centre said the launch of a Rokot carrier-rocket with a Briz-KM booster, carrying a Kompsat-2 earth remote-sensing satellite built under Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) program, was scheduled to take place at 7.05 a.m. GMT from the Plesetsk launch site.
The carrier-rocket will deploy the satellite, weighing approximately 800 kg, into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 685 km.
According to KARI researchers, the Komsat 2 satellite will provide multi-spectral, high-resolution images for earth mapping.
Moscow and Seoul signed an agreement in 2004 to develop South Korea's civilian space launch system, and are carrying out programs to train the country's first astronaut by 2007.
The Rokot carrier-rocket, developed by the Khrunichev Centre, is a modification of the RS-18 (SS-19 Mod.1 Stilletto) two-stage ballistic missile that is being gradually decommissioned from Russia's Strategic Missile Forces. The rocket is designed to put spacecraft weighing under two tons into near-earth orbits.
All commercial launches involving Rokots are carried out by Evrorokot, a joint venture in which Khrunichev Centre holds a 49% stake, and the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company holds 51%.

South Korea will launch a satellite for geographical updates, natural resource searches and environmental observation from a Russian spaceport late this month, government officials said Wednesday.

The multipurpose Arirang 2 satellite is scheduled to lift off July 28 from a launch pad in the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, about 800 km northeast of Moscow, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.
The launch was previously scheduled for November but had to be delayed due to technical problems.
The satellite is expected to give the country the ability to take high-resolution pictures of the earth's surface. It will be placed on a 685-km orbit by a Russian rocket, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The new satellite is equipped with a high-resolution multi-spectral camera jointly developed by a local firm and Electro Optical Industries Ltd. of Israel, and can recognize each 1-square-meter space on the ground as a dot.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) shipped the satellite to Russia on June 20. South Korean and Russian technicians have conducted last-minute checks in preparation for the launch, Yonhap reported.
The satellite is scheduled to be launched shortly after 4 p.m. (Korea time), and be separated from the booster rocket 48 minutes later. It is expected to first make contact with Malindi satellite station in Kenya 80 minutes after the liftoff, and send signals to the KARI's main control facility in Daejeon around 11 p.m. the same day.

Experts say it will take one or two days to know for certain if the satellite has entered the correct orbit, Yonhap reported.

Reflecting the satellite's capability to take high-definition photographs, the KARI signed a $27 million deal with France's Spot Image Co. to provide pictures taken during the satellite's three-year operational life cycle.
South Korea's Science Ministry said it plans to develop the technology acquired from Arirang 2 for the more advanced Arirang 3 that is tentatively scheduled for launch after 2009, Yonhap reported.

If the new satellite is successfully launched, South Korea will have a total of nine satellites in space.

Russia has started preparations to launch KOMPSAT-2 (Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2), a South Korean space vehicle, on July 28th from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia.

A light Rokot carrier-rocket and a Briz-KM booster had been delivered to the Plesetsk launch site in preparation for the launch of a Kompsat-2 earth remote-sensing satellite built under a program developed by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
Moscow and Seoul signed an agreement in 2004 to develop Korea's civilian space launch system, and are pursuing programs to train the country's first astronaut by 2007.
The Rokot carrier-rocket is a modification of the RS-18 two-stage ballistic missile that is being gradually decommissioned from Russia's Strategic Missile Forces . The rocket (Rockot-KM launch vehicle of Eurockot from Plesetsk, Russia) is designed to put spacecraft weighing under 2 tons into near-earth orbits.
The Rokot will deploy the South Korean satellite, which has a mass of approximately 800 kg, into a circular sun-synchronous circular orbit at an altitude of 685 km, inclination = 98.13º, period = 98.46 min, the mean local time of the ascending node is at 10:50 hours. The KOMPSAT-2 orbit is identical to that of KOMPSAT-1 but with a different phase.

The main mission objectives of the KOMPSAT-2 are to provide a surveillance capability for large-scale disasters by acquiring high-resolution imagery for GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications.
