Vega launcher makes first flight

Europe's new Vega rocket has completed a flawless first flight.
Controllers at the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana ignited the rocket at 07:00 local time (10:00 GMT), and it completed its mission 70 minutes later.
The 30m-tall vehicle has been designed to put small scientific and government satellites in orbit.

Vega, ESA's new launch vehicle, is ready to operate alongside the Ariane 5 and Soyuz launchers after a successful qualification flight this morning from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
The first Vega lifted off at 10:00 GMT (11:00 CET, 07:00 local time) from the new launch pad, and conducted a flawless qualification flight.

Vega rocket set for maiden voyage

Europe's Vega rocket is finally set to make its maiden flight on Monday.
The 30m-tall vehicle, first conceived in the 1990s, will launch on what is termed a qualification flight from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.
It will carry nine satellites into orbit but the object of the mission is really to prove the rocket's systems all work as designed.

CubeSats on the Vega qualification flight


As part of the ESA Education programme, seven CubeSats will be flown on the first qualification flight of Europe's new Vega launcher.
This video shows the integration of the CubeSats in the P-POD deployment system and includes some interviews with ESA's experts and European students involved in the programme.

The Vega Launch Vehicle, VV01, with the Italian Laser Relativity Satellite (LARES), the ALMASat 1, and 9 CubeSats, is scheduled to launch from Kourou, French Guiana on the 13th February, 2012.
The 2 hour launch window opens at 10:00 UT.

Vega set for its inaugural flight

On 13 February, the European Space Agency will perform the first qualification flight of its brand new Vega launch vehicle.
The very first Vega will lift off from Europes spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, to release nine satellites into orbit and add a new capability to Europes fleet of launch systems.
