Bright lights above NZ could have been a rocket and meteor

Bright lights seen in the sky throughout much of the country overnight on Friday may have been several different events, including part of a Russian spacecraft burning up.
Dozens of people from Auckland to Invercargill have reported seeing the lights, and some also heard a boom or a bang. Many of the sightings were around 10.20pm, but there were others from as early as 8.30pm to around midnight.

Russian Cargo Craft Arrives at the International Space Station

The unpiloted Russian ISS Progress 66 cargo craft automatically docked to the International Space Station Feb. 24, completing a two-day journey to deliver almost three tons of food, fuel and supplies for the residents of the complex.

Russian Cargo Craft Sets Sail for the International Space Station

The unpiloted Russian ISS Progress 66 cargo craft launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Feb. 22 atop a Soyuz booster on a two-day journey to deliver almost three tons of food, fuel and supplies for the residents of the International Space Station. The vehicle is scheduled to automatically dock to the Pirs Docking Compartment on the Russian segment of the complex Feb. 24. It was the first launch of a Progress resupply craft to the station since a launch failure last Dec. 1 resulted in the loss of the ISS Progress 65 ship.

Progress MS-5 It is planned to be launched on March 1, 2017 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It will use the 786th and last Soyuz-U rocket.[
