Mammoth tusk haul seized by Chinese customs

Chinese customs officers have seized more than a tonne of tusks from animals that have been extinct for thousands of years - mammoths.
State media are reporting that the massive haul came from Russia and was seized in north-east China in February.
The largest piece of mammoth ivory seized was more than 1.6m (ft) long, a customs officer was quoted as saying.
There is no international ban on the trade but Chinese officials said the haul was not declared.

Hong Kong to introduce measures to fight ivory poaching

Hong Kong will introduce tougher legislation to tackle ivory poaching from elephants in Africa, Chief Executive CY Leung has said.
Mr Leung said Hong Kong would ban the import and export of elephant hunting trophies and impose tighter restrictions on ivory sales.

Ivory inferno: Does burning tusks destroy them?

This year Kenya, Ethiopia and Mozambique have all set fire to stockpiles of ivory to help tackle its illegal trade and curb elephant poaching.
The practice goes back to July 1989 when Kenya's then-President Daniel arap Moi ignited a pile of 12 tonnes of elephant tusks and helped change global policy on ivory exports.
