NGC 6042 (also NGC 6039, MCG 3-41-79 and PGC 56972) is a magnitude +13.9 elliptical galaxy located 480 million light-years away in the constellation Hercules. 

The galaxy was discovered by French astronomer Edouard Stephan using a 80.01 cm (31.5 inch) reflector at the Marseille Observatory on the 27th June 1870.
The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis Swift in June 1886 and relisted as NGC 6039.

Right Ascension 16h 04m 39.5s, Declination +17° 42' 01"
