NGC 6356 (also ESO 588-SC1 and GCL 62) is a magnitude +8.2 globular star cluster located 24,400 light-years away in the constellation Ophiuchus.
The cluster was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflecting telescope at Datchet, Berkshire, on the 17th June 1784.
