NGC 4240 (also NGC 4243, MCG -2-31-29 and PGC 39411) is a magnitude +12.3 elliptical galaxy located 91 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.

The galaxy was discovered by German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel using a 27.94 cm (11 inch) refractor at the Arcetri Observatory on the 20th May 1875.
The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis Swift in April 1886 and relisted as NGC 4243

Right Ascension 12h 17m 24.3s, Declination -09° 57' 06"
