NGC 242 (also NGC 241, MCG -5-23-3 and PGC 26981) is a magnitude +12.1 open star cluster located in the constellation Tucana.

The cluster was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at the Cape of Good Hope on the 11th April 1834.
The cluster was rediscovered by John Herschel on the 12th April 1834, and relisted as NGC 241

Right Ascension 00h 43m 33.2s, Declination -73° 26' 33"
