NGC 1640 (also PGC 15850, ESO 551-27, MCG -03-12-018, IRAS 04400-2031, 2MASX J04421453-2026052, SGC 044004-2031.7, HIPASS J0442-20) is a magnitude +11.6 barred spiral galaxy located 72 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus.

The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer Ormond Stone using a 26-inch (660 mm) f/14.9 Alvan Clark refractor at the Leander-McCormick observatory at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, on the 11th December 1885.  

The galaxy hosted the supernova SN 1990aj.
