The great Russian meteor of March 12, 1899.

It fell to the earth near Burbely, a village 14 miles from Borgo. The pieces were collected, and weighed 850 lbs., the largest fragment being 206 Russian. The meteor appeared between 9 and 10 p.m., and those who witnessed its descent say the sky was suddenly lit up with a bluish-white glare like the electric light.
The "Daily Graphic" of April 17, 1899, gave a sketch of the cavity caused by the fall of the meteor, which is stated to have been some 12 feet in diameter and 27 feet deep.

One of the stones from this fall broke through a thick chunk of sea ice and broke into fragments. It is a fairly fragile meteorite and while it displays some fusion crust most has been broken off. The majority of this specimens surface is the internal light colored material. If you look closely chondrules are visible on the exposed surface.

Kirkas, kuun kokoinen tulipallo pitkällä pyrstöllä nähtiin lentävän Suomen etelärannikon myötäisesti länsilounaasta kohti Viipuria 12.3. 1899 klo 21.29. Tulipallo hajosi pirstaleiksi kovan jylinän saattelemana. Jyrinää kesti monta minuuttia. Meteoriitin aikaansaama voimakas yliäänipamaus tutisutti taloja Helsingissä ja sai ihmiset ryntäämään ulos. Erikoista on että lehdissä kellonajaksi annetaan säännönmukaisesti kello puoli kymmenen, mutta Ramsayn ja Borgströmin Bjurbölestä tekemästä bulletinissa kellonajaksi annetaan 22:29.30: "Das Meteor erschien am 12. März 1899 um etwa 10 Uhr 29 Min. 30 sec.".

Bjurböle is the biggest meteorite fall or found in Finland so far. This meteorite was broken in many pieces when it hits the sea ice of gulf of Finland on the 12 March 1899.

328 kg of material were recovered from 8 meters deep (0.4 meter ice 0.5 meter water and 7 meters mud) by divers. The meteorite had made a 4 meter wide hole in the ice, and mud was spread over a 24 x 33 m wide area around the hole.
This meteorite is unusual in that it contains large condrules and is very fragile.
