Skywatchers in the northern hemisphere have turned their heads upwards to see the annual Geminids meteor shower.
The shower was especially easy to see this year because it is nearly the new Moon, meaning there was less moonlight to obscure it.
The meteors could be seen streaking across the night sky from 2000 GMT; peaking around 2200.

The Geminid meteor shower is will peak on Sunday 13th and Monday 14th December and will give ample opportunity to see shooting stars.
The now extinct Phaethon comet left a trail of debris that has been entering the earths atmosphere every year since the late 19th Century.

Newbury's marathon meteor watch

Newbury Astronomical Society is hoping to reach out to thousands of star gazers across the world on 12, 13 and 14 December.
Over these three days the Geminids meteors will put on a spectacular show.
Newbury Astronomical Society (NAS) society is following on from its worldwide success in August 2009.

Local astronomy buffs who want to catch this years Geminid meteor shower should remember to look to the skies this Sunday night.
Universiti Sains Malaysias Astronomy and Atmospheric Science Research Unit lecturer Associate Prof Dr Chong Hon Yew said the annual shower was visible in the night sky to the naked eye in all directions.

A knit hat, warm mittens and a thermos of hot chocolate are all you need to prepare for the incomparable Geminid Meteor Shower, near its peak show at 6 p.m. Dec. 12.
You can look up to the deep skies through Town Creek Indian Mound State Historic Sites Dobsonian telescope, and viewing will be particularly good this year due to low cast by the new moon, organizers said.
