Another meteorite fell eight miles south of Leighton at 8 p.m. Jan. 12, 1907, near Old Bethel Church. Hundreds of people saw it pass over north Alabama from east to west with a rushing sound like a heavy wind. It was brilliant and lighted the countryside as bright as day.The Leighton News reported that it exploded above Mount Hope, and fragments flew in every direction like the explosion of a sky rocket.
