Hudson volcano yellow alert in Patagonia: memories of the 1991 eruption

The Patagonia territories of Chile and Argentina, Aysen region and Santa Cruz province are under yellow alert since Saturday evening given the growing seismic activity of the Hudson volcano. The alert is specifically referred to the towns of Los Antiguos and Perino Moreno, Argentina and the Chilean communes of Aysen, General Carrera, Rio Ibaņez and Chile Chico in the Aysen Region.

Chile's Hudson volcano activity increases

Chile's government has issued a red alert and ordered the evacuation of villages within 45 kilometres of the Hudson volcano.
Clouds of steam and smoke have risen up to five kilometres into the air.

Chilean authorities have evacuated people living near the Hudson Volcano after it exploded and spewed a steam cloud 1km into the air.

Mount Hudson (locally known as Cerro Hudson) is a stratovolcano in southern Chile, and the site of one of the largest eruptions in the twentieth century. The mountain itself is covered by a glacier. There is a caldera at the summit from an ancient eruption; modern volcanic activity comes from inside the caldera. Mount Hudson is named after Francisco Hudson a 19th century Chilean Navy hydrographer.
