FALL OF METEORS IN WESTERN N.S.W.

Museum Secures Fragments From Farmer

The fall of a meteorite which exploded into about six pieces before hitting the earth at Forest Vale, about 12 miles from Tullibigeal, N.S.W., has provided the Australian Museum with the eighth known occurrence witnessed in Australia of the 90 meteorites discovered in Australia.
Investigation of the fall, which occurred in August last, has been made by Mr. T. Hodge-Smith, of the geological section of the Museum staff and published in the current issue of of Australian Museum Magazine.
Mr. H. D. Stokes, a farmer of Forest Vale, heard a noise resembling thunder about 3 p.m. on August 7, 1942, and almost immediately came the whizz, thump and a cloud of dust about a furlong to the left, followed in quick succession by another the same distance behind him, the third to his right and two more round about. On investigating later, he found what appeared to be a meteorite in a hole about a foot in depth. It proved to be only a fragment weighing about 22 lb. and five more fragments were collected which fitted together to form the almost complete meteorite. Only a very small piece was missing.
