ILS Proton successfully launches LightSquared satellite

International Launch Services (ILS), a world leader in providing mission and launch services to the commercial satellite industry, successfully carried the SkyTerra 1 satellite into orbit today on an ILS Proton for LightSquared of Reston, Virginia. This was the 7th commercial mission of the year for ILS and the 10th successful Proton launch of 2010.  The ILS Proton launch of SkyTerra 1 was the first satellite launch for LightSquared.
The ILS Proton Breeze M launched from Pad 39 at the cosmodrome at 11:29 p.m. today local time (12:29 p.m. EST, 17:29 GMT)  After a 9 hour 14 minute mission, the Breeze M successfully released the SkyTerra 1 satellite, weighing over 5.3 metric tons, into geostationary transfer orbit.  This was the 361st launch for Proton since its inaugural flight in 1965, and the 63nd ILS Proton launch overall. The Proton Breeze M launch vehicle was developed and built by Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center of Moscow, one of the pillars of the Russian space industry and the majority shareholder in ILS.

Huge antenna launched into space

A US satellite carrying the biggest commercial antenna reflector ever put in space has been launched successfully from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.
The mesh structure on the Skyterra-1 spacecraft is 22m across.

Proton rocket carries US telecom satellite to space from Baikonur

A Proton-M rocket carrying a U.S. telecom satellite, SkyTerra-1, was launched from the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakhstan at 8:29 p.m. Moscow time on Sunday, Khrunichev Aerospace Centre press secretary Alexander Bobrenyov told Itar-Tass.

The Proton-M booster rocket with Breeze-M upper stage has successfully launched the SkyTerra 1 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 20.29 MSK (17:29 GMT), 14th November, 2010.
The SkyTerra 1 spacecraft will be deployed in about 9 hours.

On Thursday the launch vehicle which consists of Proton-M booster rocket, Breeze-M upper stage and US SkyTerra 1 spacecraft arrived at launch pad 200 of the Baikonur space port. Roscosmos expert groups started prelaunch activities in accordance with the schedule for 'Launch Day One' (L-2). The SkyTerra 1/ Proton M mission was contracted by International Launch Services Inc. (ILS), Reston, VA. Launch of SkyTerra 1 is scheduled for Nov. 14, at 8.29 p.m. MSK.

An ILS Proton rocket with a Breeze M upper stage is scheduled to launch the SkyTerra 1 satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 17:29 GMT, 14th November, 2010.
The Skyterra 1 (MSV 1) communications satellite will occupy the 101°W orbital slot.

The launch campaign for the tenth Proton mission in 2010 has officially started in Baikonur with the arrival of the SkyTerra 1 spacecraft. This campaign started only three days after the completion of the prior commercial Proton mission lofting the SIRIUS XM-5 satellite for SIRIUS XM Radio.
SkyTerra 1 was delivered to Baikonur by a Polyot-run Antonov 124 aircraft that landed today at the Yubileiny airport. The launch of the satellite onboard a Proton M/ Breeze M integrated launch vehicle is scheduled for mid-November.
