The Kunya-Urgench meteorite impacted at 17:25 local time on June 20, 1998 in Turkmenistan. The largest fragment (~900kg) made a crater 6 metres-wide and 4 metres deep, impacting the ground only 30-50 metres away from farmers working in a cotton field.
The meteorite is classified as a H5 chondrite. About 1100 kg mass has been recovered including a single stone of ~900 kg.

A 670-lb. meteorite landed in the Central Asian republic of Turkmenistan on June 20, 1998, according to the official Turkmen Press news agency reported in the Neitralny Turkmenistan daily newspaper and relayed around the world by Reuters.
By coincidence, the meteorite fell onto northern Turkmenistan land on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the election of President Saparmurat Niyazov. Local scientists asked the head of state to name the celestial body Turkmenbashi.

Saparmyrat Atażewiē Nyżazow was a Turkmen politician who served as President (later President for Life) of Turkmenistan from 2 November 1990 until his death in 2006.
He renamed the town of Krasnovodsk "Turkmenbashi" after himself, and renamed schools, airports and even a meteorite after himself and members of his family.

Turkmenbashi is not the officially accepted name for this meteorite.
The meteorite is now known as the Kunya-Urgench meteorite.
