Now in its fourth year, the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition and exhibition continues to showcase some incredible images from amateur astrophotographers all around the world, showcasing beautiful objects from within our solar system and far into deep space.

Astronomy Photographer of the Year shortlist revealed

Amateur astronomers from around the world were invited to submit entries to the competition, run by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, in conjunction with BBC Sky at Night magazine.
The competition has attracted more than 400 entries, ranging from snaps taken with hand-held digital cameras to deep space images obtained using sophisticated telescope equipment.

These crystal clear shots from deep space are not the latest images from the Hubble telescope, but the work of  British-born amateur stargazer Martin Pugh.
His work is rated so highly that he has been awarded first prize in the 2009 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition run by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

The Space Photographer of the Year 2009 results were announced last week and having had a sneak peek at some of the entries we couldn't wait to get the Royal Observatory and see the winners and judges favourites. This first time event coincides with the Observatorys International Year of Astronomy, but indications on the website suggest an intention to run the competition annually.

In a new initiative, for 2009, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich has launched Astronomy Photographer of the Year. The competition has teamed up with BBC Sky at Night magazine and photo-sharing website Flickr, and entrants were invited to submit their work to the site.
