Islanders are gearing up to celebrate the history of Shetland on Tuesday evening with their annual fire festival.
Up Helly Aa lasts for 24 hours and always falls on the last Tuesday of January.
Lerwick plays host to the celebrations which involves nearly 1000 heavily disguised men marching through the streets to mark its Viking history.

Shetlander gathered last night during "Up-Helly-Aa". Hundreds of residents of the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland had a torchlight parade which ends an elaborately-crafted Viking longship dragged through the town of Lerwick and being set on fire.

The sky above Lerwick was aglow last night as thousands of revellers turned out to celebrate centuries of tradition at Shetland's legendary Up-Helly-Aa festival.
Hundreds of hours of craftsmanship went up in flames as the replica Viking longship was reduced to ashes in the events spectacular climax.
Locals were joined by visitors who flocked from around the world to watch the festival pay homage to the isles' Nordic roots.

Lerwick will be lit up by hundreds of flaming torches tonight when the biggest event in Shetland's social calendar gets under way.
The sacrificial Viking longboat that will become the focal point of Up-Helly-Aa was receiving the finishing touches yesterday before it is set ablaze to celebrate the isles' special Nordic heritage.
