Virgin Galactic crash: Branson vows to continue space project

Sir Richard Branson has vowed to continue his space tourism venture despite the fatal crash of one of his craft in the California desert.
One pilot died and the other was badly injured when Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo craft exploded on Friday.

A pilot was killed and another injured as Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo space tourism craft crashed in the California desert.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic spaceship ignites engine in flight

The vehicle was dropped from a carrier aircraft high above California's Mojave Desert and ignited its rocket engine to produce a short period of thrust.
Sir Richard's intention is to use the spaceship to carry fare-paying passengers on short pleasure rides above the Earth's atmosphere.

SpaceShipTwo today undertook its 23rd glide flight in the pre-powered portion of its incremental test flight program.

This was a significant flight as it was the first with rocket motor components installed, including tanks. It was also the first flight with thermal protection applied to the spaceships leading edges.

High over the Mojave Desert, the stubby-winged SpaceShipTwo bent itself into a near-right angle shape and plunged nearly straight downward for more than a minute before unfolding and gliding to a runway landing before an excited crowd.
The test flight Wednesday marked another milestone in Virgin Galactic's effort to be the first company to carry tourists into space.

The first-ever visit today from a much-touted Virgin Galactic plane and spaceship, a duo that one day will ferry passengers into suborbital space from southern New Mexico, is bound to stir local interest.

Virgin Galactic on Sunday said that it had successfully completed the first piloted free flight of the VSS Enterprise, the experimental space ship previously known as SpaceShipTwo.

Virgin Galactic's suborbital spaceship, Enterprise, has made its first solo test flight, in California.
The spaceship was carried to an altitude of 13,700m by an aeroplane and then dropped to glide back to the Mojave Air and Space Port.
