Oregon's Paisley Caves as old as Clovis sites - but not Clovis

A new study of Oregon's Paisley Caves confirms that humans used the site as early as 13,200 calendar years ago and perhaps as early as 14,700 calendar years ago, and the projectile points they left behind were of the "Western Stemmed" tradition and not Clovis - which suggests parallel technological development of early inhabitants to the Americas.
The study, published this week in the journal Science, could have a major impact on theories of how the Western Hemisphere was populated. The research was funded by multiple organisations, including the Keystone Archaeological Research Fund, the Bernice Peltier Huber Charitable Trust, and the National Science Foundation.

Red dot becomes 'oldest cave art'

Red dots, hand stencils and animal figures represent the oldest examples yet found of cave art in Europe.
The symbols on the walls at 11 Spanish locations, including the World Heritage sites of Altamira, El Castillo and Tito Bustillo have long been recognised for their antiquity.
But researchers have now used refined dating techniques to get a more accurate determination of their ages.
One motif - a large red dot - is said to be more than 40,000 years old.

Uranium-series dating reveals Iberian paintings are Europes oldest cave art

Palaeolithic paintings in El Castillo cave in Northern Spain date back at least 40,800 years - making them Europe's oldest known cave art, according to new research published today in Science.
The practice of cave art in Europe thus began up to 10,000 years earlier than previously thought, indicating the paintings were created either by the first anatomically modern humans in Europe or, perhaps, by Neanderthals.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

It could almost be a modern Brit horror, a film that takes us on an eerie descent into an ancient cave to discover something strange, awe-inspiring and scary ... Werner Herzog.
This director has scored another remarkable success with this documentary, using 3D to accentuate the massive, sculptural forms revealed to his camera. He and a minimal crew were allowed into the extraordinary Chauvet cave in the south of France, named after Jean-Marie Chauvet, the explorer who in 1994 made a Tutankhamun-level discovery: hundreds of pictures of animals drawn with flair, sophistication and detail by early man around 32,000 years ago.

Cave of Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc

The Chauvet Cave in France was found about 1994. Cave paintings made by cavemen 32,000 or more years ago were found in the cave by amateur cave explorers. Remarkable paintings made by our ancient ancestors.

Archaeologists digging in a cave in Israel have found what appears to be the world's first cutlery. They believe that the tiny stone knives dating back at least 200,000 years would have been used to cut meat during a meal.
A large concentration of the knives was found around a central fireplace containing burned animal bones. Previous research has shown that the cave's early humans cooked their meat, which was mostly deer but also horse or rhinoceros.
