NASA Astronaut Shane Kimbrough, Space Station Crewmates Return to Earth

Expedition 50 Commander Shane Kimbrough of NASA is among three crew members from the International Space Station (ISS) who returned to Earth Monday, after 173 days in space, landing in Kazakhstan at approximately 7:20 a.m. EDT (5:20 p.m. Kazakhstan time).

Expedition 50-51 Welcomed Aboard the Space Station

After launching Nov. 18, Kazakh time, in their Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Expedition 50-51 Soyuz Commander Oleg Novitskiy of Roscosmos and Flight Engineers Peggy Whitson of NASA and Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency arrived at the International Space Station Nov. 19 and were welcomed aboard the orbital complex by station Commander Shane Kimbrough of NASA and Flight Engineers Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko of Roscosmos.

Proxima launch

Ready for launch

On Thursday, ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson and Roscosmos commander Oleg Novitsky will take a lift to the top of this 50 m-tall rocket, climb aboard and wait for the trip of a lifetime. At 20:20 GMT the engines will ignite and propel the trio 1640 km in less than 10 minutes - averaging a 50 km/h increase every second for nine minutes.
