Title: Imaging and mapping the impact of clouds on skyglow with all-sky photometry
Author: Andreas Jechow, Zoltán Kolláth, Salvador J. Ribas, Henk Spoelstra, Franz Hölker, Christopher C. M. Kyba

Artificial skyglow is constantly growing on a global scale, with potential ecological consequences ranging up to affecting biodiversity. To understand these consequences, worldwide mapping of skyglow for all weather conditions is urgently required. In particular, the amplification of skyglow by clouds needs to be studied, as clouds can extend the reach of skyglow into remote areas not affected by light pollution on clear nights. Here we use commercial digital single lens reflex cameras with fisheye lenses for all-sky photometry. We track the reach of skyglow from a peri-urban into a remote area on a clear and a partly cloudy night by performing transects from the Spanish town of Balaguer towards Montsec Astronomical Park. From one single all-sky image, we extract zenith luminance, horizontal and scalar illuminance. While zenith luminance reaches near-natural levels at 5km distance from the town on the clear night, similar levels are only reached at 27km on the partly cloudy night. Our results show the dramatic increase of the reach of skyglow even for moderate cloud coverage at this site. The powerful and easy-to-use method promises to be widely applicable for studies of ecological light pollution on a global scale also by non-specialists in photometry.

'LED street lights are disturbing my sleep'

In towns and cities across the world, the colour of night is changing. Traditional yellow sodium street lights are steadily being replaced by white LED bulbs. The new lights use less energy, dramatically cutting carbon emissions and saving money. But not everybody is happy.

Light pollution dampens urban robins' song

The song and behaviour of the UK's favourite bird is being affected by light and noise pollution.
That is according to research from Southampton University, which revealed how robins are affected by night-time lighting and road noise in a city park.

New study shows LED lights attract fewer insects than other lights

New research by scientists from the University of Bristol has revealed that domestic LED lights are much less attractive to nuisance insects such as biting midges than traditional filament lamps.

Less lighting has no impact on crime or collisions

Reduced street lighting at night does not lead to an increase in crime or car crashes, a report suggests.
Researchers analysed 14 years of data from 62 councils in England and Wales which had tried strategies such as permanently switching off lights or dimming them. They said the findings could help save money and reduce carbon emissions.

Harbour light 'attracts ship-damaging creatures'

Artificial lighting in harbours is attracting sea creatures that damage ships and boats, a study suggests.
Scientists believe that the night-time illumination is altering the behaviour of some animals that attach to vessels' hulls. Keel worms, for example, are lured in by the lights.

LED streetlamp aims to improve public's view of stars

Researchers believe they have come up with a new type of LED-powered streetlamp that could radically reduce light pollution.
Current designs "leak" large amounts of light in unwanted directions, obscuring views of the stars, wasting energy and making it harder for drivers to see.
The team, based in Mexico and Japan, said they believed their solution was the "best ever reported".

Street lights may go back on in Powys as low energy LED

Thousands of street lights turned off by a UK council to save money four years ago could be switched back on under plans to use low energy bulbs.
Powys council wants to spend £1.4m installing LED bulbs in 14,000 lights, including the 4,770 it blacked out.
