Cloud cover and sell-out planetarium theatre screenings didn't deter keen Aucklanders who stayed over at the Stardome to witness the last total lunar eclipse until 2014.
Around 100 people rolled out sleeping bags last night to witness the phenomenon with telescopes and enjoy the company of other enthusiastic stargazers.

Lunar eclipse turns moon blood red

Stargazers were treated to a rare celestial event last night as the moon turned blood red during the last full lunar eclipse the region will see for three years.
Astronomers and onlookers gazed at the sky for more than three hours, from when the moon first became visible about 5.30pm until the dying moments of the eclipse, about 8.30pm.

Clear skies hope for Shetland view of lunar eclipse

Skywatchers in Shetland may have a chance of observing a total lunar eclipse due to take place on Saturday.
A four-minute opportunity to view the eclipse will occur from about 14:54 when the moon rises in Lerwick.
But forecasters have warned there is only a 50% chance of the skies being clear of cloud at the crucial moment.
