It's a super volcano but Mt Taranaki doesn't have the oomph to earn supervolcano status.
At a free lecture in New Plymouth last night, Victoria University's Professor Colin Wilson said Mt Taranaki was a lovely volcano to study but had nowhere near the destructive power of the world's supervolcanoes.

Mount Taranaki, or Mount Egmont, is an active but quiescent stratovolcano in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The mountain is more commonly referred to as Taranaki although it has the two official names under the alternative names policy of the New Zealand Geographic Board.
