The quake was felt as far away as Madras (Chennai) in India, and Phuket in Thailand.

There are no early reports of damage or casualties. But the authorities in Thailand have issued a tsunami warning that could lead to an evacuation.

"There is a possibility of a tsunami happening and if it happens it will affect Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Satun and Trang provinces" - National Disaster Warning Centre.
