Nepal quake landslides 'could have been far worse'

The impacts stemming from the big earthquakes that struck Nepal earlier this year could have been much, much worse, say scientists.
An international team has just published a review of the events, showing the number of landslides was far lower than people had feared.
And the group could find no evidence of Himalayan glacial lakes suffering significant damage - a key concern.

Risk of future Nepal-India earthquake increases

There is an increased risk of a future major earthquake in an area that straddles the west of Nepal and India, scientists warn.
New data has revealed that the devastating quake that hit Nepal in April did not release all of the stress that had built up underground, and has pushed some of it westwards.

Europe's Sentinel-1a satellite has got its first good look at the aftermath of Saturday's big quake in Nepal.
The radar spacecraft is able to sense ground movement by comparing before and after imagery acquired from orbit.

The COSMO-SkyMed system has been rapidly activated to guarantee the support needed by the populations and governments in the countries affected by the devastating earthquake (of a magnitude of 7.9) that hit Nepal and some neighbouring countries on Saturday 25 April, causing thousands of victims. After the first tremor, recorded on Saturday 25, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded another 45 tremors over 4.5 on the Richter scale, and a further 15 over 6.5.

An estimated 6.6 million people live in 30 districts were affected by the 7.9 magnitude earthquake which struck Nepal on Saturday, the United Nations Office in Nepalese capital Kathmandu said in a statement on Sunday morning.
