Gazing into distant galaxies has become a lot more exciting thanks to a researcher at the Université de Montréal. He's created what the school says is "the world's most sensitive astronomical camera."

Controller boosts telescope output by damping noise
Technology to double the effective lens diameter of the world's telescopes has been invented at the University of Montreal, which recently demonstrated what it says is the most sensitive astronomical camera devised to date.
The key to the invention is an electronic controller that decreases optical noise tenfold. The controller provides subelectron resolution with any charge-coupled device (CCD)-based imager, such as the NASA camera attached to Québec's Mont-Mégantic Observatory.

Sony has announced two new Cybershot cameras; the TX1 and WX1.

The TX1 has Carl-Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom lens (equivalent to a 35-140mm), A 10.2 effective megapixels back-illuminated CMOS sensor, optical image stabilisation, Sweep Panorama mode,
HD 720p movie recording (MPEG4, 29 minutes/2gb), 3" touch-screen LCD display, and 10fps shooting, all for around £380.

Both cameras' have Sony's Exmor-R CMOS sensor that has a special  sensor structure to capture more light than conventional CMOS sensors,  while still reducing image noise.
Both camera also have Sony's BIONZ processor.
The Twilight mode for example will combine a high-speed burst of six frames to produce one image with reduced noise, and the Anti Motion Blur mode will capture fast-moving objects while reducing noise.
The High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200) allows for faster shutter speed in low light. In addition to High Sensitivity Mode (ISO), you can select up to seven ISO settings (Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

The TX1 is slim, measuring only 0.65-inches. The WX1 is slightly fatter (0.80 inches) and has not such a large LCD screen (2.7-inch) than the TX1, but it is cheaper ($349.99), and is better suited to low-light conditions because the 5x Optical f/2.4 lens is slightly faster.

The TX1 comes in silver, grey, pink or blue. The WX1 comes in black.

By now the moon buzz may be a bit tedious. But here's an interesting fact:.
In 1962, Mercury astronaut John Glenn bought a cheap 35mm camera at a Cocoa Beach, Fla., drug store, because he alone thought America's first orbital spaceflight deserved to be documented with still images. Photographer Michael Light shares this bit of information in his project Full Moon. Over time, Light explains, NASA recognised the value of in-flight photography and invested in medium-format Hasselblad cameras for the Gemini program -- arguably the best cameras out there.

Canon Lenses for dSLR Astrophotography
If your not looking to break the bank, but still want good quality lenses for Astrophotography, then read on. I use a crop-body Canon dSLR camera and have found that the following lenses offer some of the best performance for shooting the stars.

~ Just to add, the canon EF lenses made after 1987 will fit the new Canon EOS digital bodies - and that there are adaptors available to use quality fast manual 'old and cheap' lenses onto your digital canon.
(For example, a second-hand Zuiko 50mm f1.4 or f1.2 lens will outperform the standard canon lens)

Sony Alpha 230, 330 and 380 DSLR cameras
Sony has announced three new DSLR cameras on Monday in time for the summer.
The new models, the alpha 230, alpha 330 and alpha 380 confirm previous rumours on the Internet, and offer a resolution range from 10.2 megapixels to 14.2 megapixels for the alpha 380.

According to Sony, the entry-level model; the alpha 230 will be the "world's lightest DSLR featuring an APS-C sized image sensor and in-body image stabilisation".

The fastest imaging system ever devised has been demonstrated by researchers reporting in the journal Nature.
Their camera snaps images less than a half a billionth of a second long, capturing over six million of them in a second continuously.
It works by using a fast laser pulse dispersed in space and then stretched in time and detected electronically.

Title: A quantum imager for intensity correlated photons
Authors: D L Boiko, N J Gunther, N Brauer, M Sergio, C Niclass, G B Beretta and E Charbon

We report on a device capable of imaging second-order spatio-temporal correlations g^(2)(x, T) between photons. The imager is based on a monolithic array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) implemented in CMOS technology and a simple algorithm to treat multiphoton time-of-arrival distributions from different SPAD pairs. It is capable of 80 ps temporal resolution with fluxes as low as 10 photons s-1 at room temperature. An important application might be the local imaging of g^(2) as a means of confirming the presence of true Bose-Einstein macroscopic coherence (BEC) of cavity exciton polaritons.
