Indonesias Mount Gamkonora volcano is spewing hot ash and smoke into the air, as seen in this image taken by the MERIS instrument aboard ESAs satellite Envisat, causing more than 8000 people to be evacuated amid fears of an imminent eruption, according to officials.

Officials raised the alert to the highest level on Tuesday after the volcano, located in the eastern province of North Maluku, started spitting out flaming material, indicating magma was approaching the craters surface making an eruption more likely.

Mount Gamkonora erupted yesterday at 14:50 hrs East Indonesian Time.
Mount Gamkonora is located 3.5 hours from Ternate, capital of North Maluku Province. The mountain has erupted lava,  and dust is now piling up to 30 cm high within a radius of around 7.5 km from the epicentre.
It has been reported that there have been five eruptions since 07:30 Jakarta time this morning.
4,000 people have been moved from the most dangerous villages (Tosoa, Goal, Tongute, and Togola). Some 15,000 people are still within the radius of 8 km from the epicentre.
There has been no report of casualties and damages so far.


Some 3,000 people have fled the slopes of Mount Gamkonora, a volcano in Halmahera Island in Maluku, after it spewed ash, smoke and other volcanic debris, a local official said Tuesday.

Mount Gamnokora is the highest peak of Halmahera island, Indonesia. It has produced an elongated series of craters along the north-south rift. The largest eruption in 1673 was accompanied with tsunami which inundated the nearby villages.
